Design Consultant vs. Order Taker: Elevating Your Window Consultation Experience

There's a stark contrast between the traditional salesperson and the design consultant in window and door replacement.

While both may offer quotes and take measurements, the depth and quality of service differ significantly. Understanding this difference can lead to a more satisfying and functional home improvement experience.

In this post, Duncan Newman shares the differences and why it matters in your window buying experience.

Traditional Salesperson: The Quick Fix Approach

Traditional salespeople often enter your home with a singular goal: to close a sale quickly. They rely on the premise that you already have a fixed idea of what you want, usually based on prior estimates. This approach might seem efficient, but it overlooks critical aspects of home customization.

Duncan highlights the pitfalls of this approach: “The biggest problem that I have with traditional in-home salespeople is they come into a customer's house… the customer already had an estimate, and they will say to a traditional standard salesperson I've already had an estimate. Here are the measurements. Take that proposal and give me your price. What a mistake.”

Design Consultant: The Thoughtful Advisor

A design consultant, on the other hand, takes a holistic approach to your window and door needs. Instead of rushing through measurements and providing a quick quote, they invest time in understanding your home's unique characteristics and specific preferences.

They ask probing questions like, “Why does that window open that way? Did you design it that way? Or did you buy the house, and it was already done that way?” Such inquiries lead to tailored solutions that align with your lifestyle, enhancing aesthetics and functionality.

For instance, a design consultant might suggest changing a fixed window to an operable one to improve airflow, potentially reducing energy costs and increasing comfort. They also consider options like window color, which can significantly impact your home's overall look and feel.

Many homeowners are unaware of the variety of options available beyond standard white vinyl windows. A consultant introduces choices like black, espresso, or custom colors, transforming your home’s appearance.

Practical Benefits and Real-World Examples

The benefits of engaging a design consultant extend beyond immediate aesthetic upgrades. Improved window functionality can lead to better energy efficiency.

“Let's just talk about airflow. For example, starting around 1990, 1995, traditional home builders started putting in a lot of windows… And a lot of those windows, because of the cost, the developers bought stationary windows, picture windows. They don't open. So you have a lot of windows that don't allow any air into your house,” says Duncan.

Replacing stationary windows with operable ones can enhance ventilation, reducing reliance on air conditioning and lowering energy bills. Design consultants also recommend materials and coatings, such as low E glass, which blocks UV rays and protects interior furnishings from sun damage.

A recent project in Carmel Valley illustrates the difference between the order taker and the design consultant.

According to Duncan, the homeowner had a west-facing stationary window, which, due to its dual-pane construction, offered no airflow and only a minimal improvement in energy efficiency.

He explains, “If that person had just changed their windows the way they were, they would have kept a stationary window that faced west, they would have received no benefit other than the fact that it would have been dual paned… but us changing that to a crank out casement window that allowed her to open that window fully 90 degrees, Every square inch of that window now became airflow, flowed all the way from the front to the back of the house and has changed the outcome of that window situation.

This change significantly improved the home's ventilation, reducing the homeowner’s reliance on air conditioning and ultimately lowering their energy bills. Additionally, the new window’s low E glass reduced UV damage to furniture and flooring.

That's Why Experience Matters

The knowledge and experience of a design consultant are invaluable. They are well-versed in the latest products, trends, and window and door design innovations. This expertise ensures you receive comprehensive advice and a wide range of options. In contrast, traditional salespeople, with limited knowledge and a primary focus on closing sales, may not offer the best solutions for your home.

Choose Wisely for Long-Term Satisfaction

Traditional sales approaches might seem straightforward, but they also need to deliver the best results for homeowners. Opting for a design consultant provides a more in-depth, personalized service that considers your unique needs and preferences, ultimately leading to a more satisfying and efficient home improvement project.

For your next window and door consultation, consider the value a design consultant can bring, transforming your home into a space that truly works for you.
